Of all the museums in San Francisco, the Asian Art Museum, is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to eastern art. Its holdings include nearly 15,000 treasures spanning 6,000 years of history, representing cultures throughout east. The San Francisco Asian Art Museum is the result of the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the city’s former Main Library, a 1917 beaux arts–style building. Renowned architect Gae Aulenti oversaw the dramatic transformation of the building—now featuring 40,000 square feet of Asian art museum San Francisco space—allowing the gallery to better fulfill its mission of leading a diverse global audience in discovering the unique material, aesthetic, and intellectual achievements of Eastern art and culture.
With the 29,000 square feet of space — enhanced with state-of-the-art interpretive displays and programs, the San Francisco Asian Art Museum houses nearly 2,500 objects from the world-renowned collection, offering visitors a comprehensive introduction to all of the major cultures. Curators are working in collaboration with George Sexton, an award-winning independent gallery designer, to determine the best way to display the objects beautifully and dramatically. Furthermore, another 8500 square feet of gallery space on the ground floor will be dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
